eBay Report - July 2006

You could say it was a Reel Big Month, or a Big Reel Month...

Reels:

An Otto Zwarg 12/0 big game reel, model 700 in EX created quite a stir when it appeared on eBay. There is apparently only one or two others known, and this example didn't disappoint as it reached $8055. It is pictured to the right. Some other interesting salt water reels included a Pflueger Templar #1419¾ that was mint in an EX box with a 1950 date stamp, which brought $202.50. A beautiful Holzmann tarpon reel of German silver and hard rubber and having mother of pearl inlays in VG reached $3416. A Montague Imperial German silver and Hard rubber reel in EX sold for $535. A Hardy Fortuna Big Game reel in VG brought $1326, while a 6" version in VG reached 2026.99 later in the month. An Edward Vom Hofe 621 in 9/0 size and EX reached $745.

British Fly reels dominate the category but one not often seen was a Dingley Forrest of Kelso 3-7/8" salmon reel in EX that sold for $151. An Edward Vom Hofe #360 trout reel in VG brought $3806. A Cozzone 80 yard Bakelite and German silver fly reel in VG reached $313. A Yawman & Erbe Style C Combination reel, which is the largest size and wasn't really a fly reel, in EX condition brought $268.63.

19th Century reels were led off by a brass stop latch reel in VG that sold for $280. A Conroy, Bissett & Malleson brass ball handle reel in VG brought $500. Last month an identical reel to the unmarked reel shown to the left came up on eBay, but it was stamped Conroy, Bissett & Malleson and sold for $713. This unmarked VG example brought $760... go figure!

Kentucky style reels included a rare Talbot #53 that topped out at $2205 and a Talbot #35 from Nevada, MO in EX that brought $1469.  An Al Foss Easy Control 3-25 in EX sold for $480.

A Gentleman Streamliner rod and reel combination, 4'6" and VG brought $164.09. A Model CK Pflueger Supreme that was mint in the box soared to $1135.

Lures:

Several Gantron painted CCBC lures were offered this month. A Striper Pikie that was EX-in an EX box reached $355; and two EX Darters brought $307.86 and $239.36. I thought the Surfster in Mullet at was EX in a VG box with papers was a beautiful lure. It sold for $560 and is shown here.

A couple of uncommon Lucky Louie Shovelnose Salmon plugs that were mint in box came up at auction, and a pink pearl version brought $290, while a white/red head color sold for $255.

A Heddon Spoony Fish in the large size, nickel and EX sold for $312.85. A Hi Tail in the checkered flag pattern and VG brought $331.55. A River Runt, yellow/RH #919YRH, and EX in a VG box sold for $649. "Daddy Head-On Basser" in strawberry and VG sold for $775.69. A plastic Lucky 13, pearl coachdog and EX- reached $977. A Spin Diver in frog spot and VG sold for $580. A fat body 100 minnow in frog scale color and EX brought $837.50. A Flaptail Jr., black with a white head and EX in a VG box reached $1292. A "green scale with gold" Sonic in EX sold for $405.

A South Bend Surf Oreno, Yellow/red & black spots, and EX topped out at $155.29.

Lures from "miscellaneous" makers included a Bonafide Aluminum Minnow in EX- and aluminum color reached $2425. A Lake George Floater, red/Y/W and EX- sold for $581. A Zink Screwtail that was EX in a VG box, white/red head, which brought $268.44. A Coast Minnow, strawberry spot on yellow, and VG condition reached $405. A Bagley grass rat in brown crawdad finish and EX sold for $202.50, and a Killer B-2 in goldfish and VG brought $305. A unique Kumm's Fish Spotter from Michigan in the 1930s, 3" long and VG- reached $255. It is shown to the left. A red Clinton Little Wonder #70 in VG sold for $406. A Smith Minnow from LaGrange, IN that was VG, white with green back, topped out at $4326.79.

Metal baits included a Chapman & Sons metal minnow in VG at $440.99. A 10" Hardy Silver Herring Tunny Devon in VG sold for $916.36.

Rods:

Bamboo fly rods of note included a Montague Acadian, 3/2, 8'6" in EX, which brought $163.50, while a Montague Redwing, 9', 3/2 and EX sold for $405. An EX 7' Orvis Battenkill, 3/2 sold for $1052. A Jim Payne V. L. & A. marked, 9', 3/2 in EX reached $1775.75. A Wright & McGill Granger, 8'6", 3/2 and EX sold for $470. A Heddon #36 salmon fly rod, 9'6", 3/2 with extended fighting butt and VG brought $299. An H. L. Leonard 8'6:, 3/2, 6 weight rod in Mint received 27 bids and reached $1250. An 8'6" Leonard Tournament, 3/2 and EX sold for $1025.01.

It was amazing to see a Fenwick casting rod handle (only) with two ferrule chucks in VG sell for $314. Also of interest was an Abercrombie & Fitch Passport fiberglass combo rod. It was 11 pieces that fit into a 6.5" x 3.5" x 1" box in new condition and sold for $255. It is shown here. A Heddon Superlative #2270-L, 6' fiberglass casting rod in EX brought $430.25.

An antique E. T. Hoar of Rangley, Maine, wooden 10' 3/1 fly rod in VG sold for $306.99. 

Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff:

There were some great pinbacks this month. An Angler's Club of Absecon Island, NJ 14K gold pin from 1923 brought $271. That is it shown to the left. A sterling International Tuna Cup Match pin from 1957 in EX reached $127.50.

A Marshall Wells split shot tin with celo top in VG brought $124.27. The same in a Selby with the shotgun shell on top and EX reached $306.99. An Evinrude tip tray advertising Rowboat & Canoe motors and VG sold for $355.

A French tin float or bobber by Ferax that was EX in an EX box with papers brought $545. A brass horsehair & gut twister in VG sold for $789.65.

A catalog from 1885 by W. J. Cummins in the UK and VG sold for $379.45. A Pflueger catalog #156, c1936 and VG received 22 bids before selling for $181.50. A Field & Stream from December 1899 in G sold for $213.50. An H-I booklet on fly fishing by Zane Grey, dated 1936 and VG received 43 bids before topping out at $213.

A Phil Spring brook trout fish decoy, 7¼ inches and VG, c1920s-30s brought $460. An EX Maine Indian woven ash creel/basket with center hole sold for $345. A canoe chair by Tubbs of VT in EX reached $178.50. A hard leather rod case for three rods, branded Lyon & Coulson, and VG topped out at $500.

An EX Walton's Thumb fly fishing tool by Hank Roberts in box with instructions sold for $202.50. If you're going to have Walton's Thumb you also need a Hardy Angler's 3rd Arm. It was made for one armed anglers, was in mint condition and sold for $561.59. A VG Marbles Fish Knife with sheath received 19 bids before selling for $2046.01. It is shown to the right.

A Churchill Ettinger limited edition print "Table Rock Run" in VG sold for $197.50. A brown trout mount from Kezar Lake in Maine with certificate from the "One that didn't get away" club brought $355. A portfolio of the Denton Prints by the NY Fish & Game (76 prints) in EX sold for $1088.97.
