eBay Report: April 2005
Some sales on eBay never seem to make any sense. An example this
month was the sale of a very common Ocean City German silver and hard
rubber surf reel in VG that was on a 6' boat rod in VG. Individually,
both items are very hard to sell... this outfit brought $302.50!
Rods:
There were quite a few interesting rods this month, ranging from
fiberglass to traditional cane or bamboo. Garnering 22 bids was a Paul
Young 8' bamboo spinning rod in EX condition. It was two piece/one tip
and sold for $518. A Montague spinning rod, 7', 2/1 in EX reached
$125.75. A Leonard 2 hand salmon rod, 10' 6" and EX brought $800. A
Leonard #50½ Tournament, 8'6", 3/2 for a 5 wt
line and restored to EX- topped out at $860. An
Horrocks-Ibbotson Beaverkill 8' 6" fly rod, 3/2, and VG sold for $175,
while an H-I Princess, 7'6", 2/1 and VG reached $227.50. A Heddon
Deluxe Featherweight President #50, 2/2, 7'6" and VG sold for $2650.
Towards the end of the month a Lyle Dickerson #861711, 8'6", 3/2,
c1936 and EX brought $2424. A 7'6" Pezon et Michel bamboo fly rod with
Abercrombie & Fitch markings, 2/1, 6 wt, and EX sold for $482.77.
Fiberglass rods of interest included a Phillipson Epoxite 6'6" fly rod
formerly owned and signed by Dave Whitlock. It was Whitlock's favorite
"bream" rod - 2/2, for a 4 wt sold for $500. A Browning Silaflex
baitcasting rod, 6' and EX which brought $391.99. A Fenwick Feralite
6', 2/1 baitcasting rod in EX sold for a whopping $709.11. A Fenwick
Voyager FC61-3, 6' casting pack rod in EX brought $175.50. A Heddon
bamboo casting rod #2500, 5'6", 2/2, and EX sold for $256.
An old
True Temper steel rod that was 5' long and mint in its original bag
sold for $119.30. A Bristol/Edsall combo rod and reel in VG received
20 bids and topped out at $373.80. A Great Lakes Whirlaway Imperial
with 6' rod and VG reached $132.50.
Reels:
There were lots of
interesting reels this month. An inexpensive, but rather rare reel is
the Aeorcast with its three armed handle. One of these plastic level
wind reels in VG sold for $77 in April and is shown to the right. A
bit higher quality, but more common, Record #2000 that was EX in its
leather case with parts, oil, etc. brought $561.11. An Ambassadeur
Ultra Mag II, which was EX in the box/tools and papers topped out at
$351.95. A J.A. Coxe #15 (also labeled a Jaleoxe) that was EX with
leather case brought a whopping $427. A Coxe 94C narrow green aluminum
casting reel in VG sold for $72. A Heddon Pal M26 Pro Weight, which
was gold anodized aluminum, and G-VG brought $188.50.
Older casting
reels included an A. F. Meisselbach & Bro. 2 screw Tri-Part that was
VG in a G box/papers, which sold for the reserve price of $500. A
Talbot #3 in German silver with ivory know and VG sold for $1136. A
Shakespeare Style C level wind reel in GS and VG brought $717.07. A
Horton Meek #3 free spool tournament reel in EX seemed a good buy at
$330.09. A nice Winchester LW reel #4345 that was Mint in a purple box
with no label brought $1000. All the Winchester boxes I have ever seen
are grey or tan color so this was probably not a Winchester box. An Al
Foss Easy Control #3-25 in EX sold for $380.
Big game reels included
a Julius Vom Hofe B Ocean 6" diameter in German silver and hard rubber
and VG. It sold for $2827.77. A more modern ABU Garcia 1040 that was
mint in a wooden box reached $395. A Zwarg M600 3/0 in EX condition
topped out at $666.
Antique
reels included a Frederick Vom Hofe & Sons ball handle reel. It was a
small 2½" size marked 100 yards and was in VG. It
brought $1209.99. It is shown in the photo to the left.
Fly
reels included a nice Yawman & Erbe key wind automatic in the smallest
size in a G box, which sold for $362. Then a large size key wind in VG
brought $354. A Thompson #500 in VG brought $405. An unmarked Julius
vom Hofe/Leonard Mills hard rubber and GS early fly reel in VG reached
$1280. An Otto Zwarg M300 2/0 in VG brought $1418. An unmarked salmon
(4¼" dia) fly reel that was GS and
rubber and VG brought $1375. A rare 2-5/8" Hardy Uniqua c1930s in EX
reached $369.
Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff:
There were some
interesting toy outboard motors this month. A Gale Buccaneer that was
mint in the box reached an astounding $1654.99. Take a look at it to
the right. An Evinrude Big Twin in VG brought 132.49, another in
EX sold for $156.37, while one that was Mint in box reached $177.50.
A Rudolph's minnow bucket c1890s in VG sold for $535. A three prong
ice spear with 26" no wood handle and VG brought $132.50.
Catalogs
of interest included a 1921 South Bend "Days of Reel Sport" in VG
which brought $206.64. An EX Farlow catalog from 1909 brought $366.72.
A Shakespeare dealer catalog from 1931, and EX, sold for $227.50. A
1913-14 Iver Johnson Catalog in VG topped out at $132.49. An EX 1959
ABU Garcia catalog brought $51. A Foster's of Kent, England 1893
catalog in VG sold for $469.
The EX Heddon fish
decoy shown here, which is in a nice perch finish, brought $1302.77.
Field & Stream badges included a Gold Tuna $732.22; Silver Swordfish
$676.66; and silver Yellowtail $560.
A George Lawrence creel with
half leather lid and EX sold for $561. A black tackle box with gold
trim by B. F. Meek & Sons, in VG condition reached $511.
Lures:
A 20 year old
wooden Castaic Rainbow Trout swimbait, 9" long, which originally sold
for $100, reached $191.50. These lures made for fishing Florida strain
bass in California are quite sought after already by collectors. This
example is shown to the right.
Lure boxes continued to sell for
astronomical prices as a Shakespeare picture box ONLY for a #44 white
5 hook minnow that was G-VG condition sold for $3700. A Jacobs Polly
Frog lure box reached $260. It was VG condition. A "Sure Thing" Wooden
Minnow box only in VG sold for $460.
A Heddon Magnum Torpedo in SS color and VG brought $345. A Crazy
Crawler #2120 XBW that was EX in a VG box with papers reached $425. A
#7500 Vamp in Allen Stripey and VG sold for $447. A Westchester Bug,
green/white/red and EX sold for $850. A #20 minnow that was white in a
maroon box must be in high demand, for both box and lure were only in
G condition, yet they reached $1399.47. A Giant River Runt in scale
finish and EX condition sold for $316.88. A fly rod Punkinseed, RH/flitter
and EX sold for $800, and a #9630 Punkinseed in an unusual
chrome/black spook ribs and VG+ brought $1600. Finally, a Gamefisher
in the scarce frog scale paint, but only VG, reached $1852.75.
Creek Chub baits included a Tarpon Pikie in Silver flash color that
was VG in a VG box brought $1375. A Sucker #3900 in EX sold for $910,
and another EX example in yellow sucker reached $639.99. A Giant Salt
Surfster in silver flash and EX- in an EX box brought $416.11. A Giant
Jointed Pikie, yellow with red & black spots, and EX in a VG yellow
box reached $290.88.
A South Bend Plug Oreno in Frog and VG brought
$362.77. A SB #999 Minnow that was VG in an EX box/papers sold for
$277.77. A Pflueger Wizard minnow in VG condition and green back
finish sold for $296. A Pflueger Neverfail Metalized Minnow with 3
hooks and VG+ brought $355. A five hook F. C. Woods Expert in aluminum
and VG+ sold for $915.57; while one in the same condition only green
back finish brought $735. A Shakespeare 3 hook minnow #33 YP (perch)
that was EX in a VG box reached $557.77.
A very unusual bait
from the 1800s was offered this month. It was an Allcock leather
Protean Minnow in a trout fry finish. It was in EX condition and sold
for $319.74. This rare lure is shown to the left.
An Al Foss store display with 20 lures on a display card, but only
in G condition brought $456. A True Temper Crippled Shad dealer six
pack with EX baits and in an EX carton reached $300.99. An unknown
(maybe known to astute collectors) mechanical frog with moving legs in
VG brought $493.06.
