THE eBay Report - April 2008

by Phil White.

I believe that the large amount of tackle offered by Lang's in April influences serious buyers of collectible tackle presented on eBay. However there were some unusual and interesting rods for sale in April...

Rods:

I found the interest (21 bids) and price reached ($129.53) on a Horrocks-Ibbotson #2525 Banshee 5' solid glass casting rod rather surprising. It is shown to the right and you can make up your own mind. A Browning Silaflex #312912, 6', 2/1 and mint sold for $372. A Fenwick custom made 7'8" casting rod with a Featherweight Champion "fat boy" handle in a blue/green color topped out at $359. A Phillipson Royal 6', 2/1 light action with Featherweight Champion handle and EX brought $732.25.

Bamboo casting rods were led by some rare Heddon rods. A Heddon #10 Irving Cobb Special, which was made for Macy's Department Stores. It was 6', 2/1, and in VG condition and sold for $356.59. A Heddon #1 Sport Special, 4'6", 2/1 and mint reached $255. A Heddon #100 Sport Special, 4'6", 2/1 and with a rare trout decal, restored to VG topped out at $561. A Pflueger #2515 Silver Lake, 5', 2/2 and EX brought $302.

Bamboo fly rods included a Heddon Black Beauty #17, 9', 3/2 and mint that brought $443.37. A 9'6" Cross (pre South Bend) 3/2 and VG sold for $202.50. A Pezon et Michel Charles Ritz Super Parabolic, 8'6", 2/2 and EX reached $860. A Wright & McGill Granger 8040, 8', 3/2 for a 5 wt line sold for $760.

A Winston 7'6" fiberglass fly rod, 2/1 and EX, reached $539.99, and a Fenwick ultra lite fiberglass spinning rod, 5'3", 2/1 and mint, brought $510.

A Tycoon Tackle bamboo big game rod HRH 12 oz. in mint sold for $600.

Reels:

One of the rarest ABU reels known, a Record 1700, reportedly one of the 1st 25 reels, hand made in c1939-40 was sold on the auction site Tradera. It was mint in the original VG+ box with a note explaining the reel. This package brought $5873.30 in US dollars. It is shown to the left. An ABU Ambassadeur 2500C that was sealed and shrink wrapped - supposedly NIB, (but how can you tell?) reached $776. I don't remember that those reels came shrink wrapped. A Ted Williams multiplier #3998 that was Mint in Box reached $241. An Ambassadeur 6500 CA that was MIB reached $670.25.

An Aerocast LW casting reel that was Mint in an EX box brought $261. A Winchester NLW #2236 utility reel in EX sold for $330 - Wow! A Heddon #40 that was an unknown to the seller, in EX brought $1125.

And, of course, another one is up for sale at the time of this report. A Daiwa PT10E reel with computer chip electronics in NIB condition sold for $128.49.

A Pflueger Akerite surf reel #2068 that was Mint in an EX box sold for $199.

Miscellaneous makers baits included a Beaver Bait No. FF-2 "Old Fighter" in frog that was MIB. It sold for $285.01. Another uncommon lure, a Kenden's Blue Surf Plug is shown here. It was Mint in a G box and sold for $769.99. A Bug-N-Bass salesman's sample display with 12 mint lures in VG+ condition overall brought $820. A pair of uncommon Gudebrod Bippee plastic lures that were MIB did well. A green frog sold for $132, while a yellow frog reached $129.88. A 5 hook Clark's version of the Expert Minnow in gold and VG condition reached $462.

Many thanks to those who take the time to send me auctions that you think are interesting. This month's include Kim Johnson, Dave O'Rourke, Åke Sundberg, Ben Wright, Frank Knapp and Dan Basore.

Al Gore please turn up the heat. Fishing is a month behind schedule and at my age a month of fishing might be important.
