There were more nice reels for sale in August, and you could have
spent yourself into the poor house.
Reels:
With all the nice reels for sale it hardly seemed necessary for
someone to spend $230.61 for a relatively common brass 40 yard Hendryx
reel - but someone did. An old brass 5:1 multiplier from the UK, c1850
and VG brought $368.32. Another British reel, brass single action with
stop and VG sold for $587.85.
Indiana Reels
included a Kiest reel in the tin/papers and VG, which brought $300. A
Hardy Hardworth that looked like an Indiana reel to me, in VG brought
$237. It is shown to the left, and you can judge for yourself. Not an
Indiana reel, but an Allcock Aerial reel with ebonite (hard rubber)
spool, 3.5" and VG brought $1312.44.
A Pflueger Atlapac #1660
in 6/0 size and Ex in the box with papers sold for $485. An Australian
Samson #1 in poor condition with a poorly replaced foot sold for
$1325. A Pflueger German silver and hard rubber sandwiched reel, 350
yards and EX brought $1150.
NY
Style reel were led off by a T. J. Conroy with S handle and engraved
to the owner with the date 1859, in a leather case and EX which sold
for $2214. A Geo. B. Appleton & Co., Boston, German silver reel with
nice Rabbeth drag handle and EX sold for $909. A J. B. Crook polished
brass S handle in EX brought $709.
Casting reels
included a Heddon #45 in EX that brought $300. A Chamberlin Cartridge
& Target Co. Hunter reel in VG reached $313. A Talbot Premier #3 from
Nevada, MO in EX- sold for $1182. A Frank Fullilove Crown model
Kentucky style reel in VG sold for $962.93.
More modern reels
included a bunch of nice Ambassadeurs sold including an Abu 5500C in
VG+ in box/papers, which sold for 222.50. A J. A. Coxe Invader #26, EX
in case, brought $387.99. A 6600C that was mint in a mint box brought
$553, and a 6500C in the same condition reached $631. Another example
of the same reel brought $622 later in the month. Also from that era
was a Shimano Bantam Beast Master V, which is a 2 speed reel. It was
NIB and sold for $211.11.
Fly reels included a
Hawks & Olgilvy, hard rubber and German silver trout reel, 60 yard
with half handle and the owners name engraved in scrip and in VG,
which brought $867. It is shown here. A Fin-Nor #3 salt water fly reel
in EX sold for $425. A Seamaster Tarpon fly reel in EX brought
$4448.98, while a Zwarg #600 Maximo with presentation inscription and
EX sold for $862.88. A brass fly reel by Herbert Magnier, London with
ivory crank and EX sold for $470.31. A Pflueger Golden West in 60 yard
size and VG sold for $360, while a Hawkeye 80 yd size and VG brought
$311. A Thomas Conroy nickel plated brass 2/0 salmon fly reel by
Julius vom Hofe and EX sold for $1009. Another Thomas Conroy raised
pillar 3" trout reel of hard rubber and aluminum sold for $1191.66.
Lures:
There were some nice Heddon lures this month, including a Dummy Double
#1500 in strawberry which was VG in a VG blue border box and brought
$3527. Another example in green crackleback and EX in box sold for
$1792. A Heddon Killer in white (or slate?) that was VG in a poor box
sold for $1784. A Heddon SOS #160, green crackleback with 2 pc.
hardware and EX, brought $555. A wooden Runtie, scale finish and EX in
box reached $372.99. A 100 minnow, c1904 with brass hardware, green
crackleback and EX brought $921.77. An early perch
Tadpolly#5009A in EX-
sold for $330. A plastic Chugger, purple scale/glitter, and EX sold
for $291.50. Lastly we had a Vintage/Antique/Rare Heddon Mystery Lure
that you see to the left. It was orange with black spots and EX and
brought $569.59. I guess it is a Torpedo.
Creek Chub lures were led by a Fly Rod Pikie in dace that was EX in a
VG intro box and sold for $585. A Hum-Bird fly rod bait, white/red
wings and EX, topped out at $355. An EX- Wiggler in Green scale sold
for $358, while a 5 hook Underwater Minnow, VG+ and golden shiner
color, brought $610.
Lures by miscellaneous makers included a VG Jim Donaly Wow,
yellow/black trim that was in an EX box and sold for $601. A celluloid
Florida Superstrike Shrimp in good condition sold for $222.50. An F.
C. Woods Musky Expert, 5" green back and VG reached $1913.88. An EX
Bagley B Flat #2 in frog spot color received 27 bids before selling
for $182.50.
A Shakespeare salt
water minnow, silver/glitter and VG, sold for $355. A South Bend Tarp
Oreno, white/red head that was VG in a VG box topped out at $393.99.
Fly rod baits included a Colorado Floating Moth in EX that sold for
$355. It is shown to the right. A Paw Paw Jug Head fly rod bait in
rainbow trout color and EX condition reached $449.44. A white
Moonlight trout bob fly rod minnow in VG condition sold for $537. A
Jamison fly rod Wiggler, yellow perch color, that was VG in VG+ box
brought $422.
Metal baits included a Chapman & Son Co., Rochester NY, spinner/devon
in brass and VG that sold for $510.
Miscellaneous Stuff:
Paper goods were led by a W. D. Chapman & Sons trade card in EX-
that sold for $1313. The bidding on this item seemed an example of two
people who wanted to make sure they got the item and bid much higher
than the value. The third high bid was $433 and there were 18 other
bids below that figure. A South Bend-Cross Rod Catalog from 1931 and
EX sold for $180.27. A CCBC 1951 catalog in EX sold for $168.50. A
Philip Goodwin print "A Timely Catch" that was VG+ closed at $153.50.
An unusual CCBC die cut cardboard sign with some condition problems
brought $1690.
A VG Winchester split shot TUBE received 26 bids
before selling for $172.49. A Winchester line spool #8242 in VG ended
at $393.88.
A hand
crank boat motor, the Ro-Peller with instructions and VG sold for
$565.55. A Ketchum Frog Harness, pat 1904 that was EX in a VG picture
box sold for $248.05. It is shown to the right. A Higgins Grab Hook
(spring hook) in EX reached $500.
A group of Zane Grey/Kovalovsky
8x10" photos were sold. One of Kovalovsky in his shop brought $88.87,
another with Grey and a Kovalovsky reel made for him with guarantee
tag brought $256.55, and one of Grey trout fishing on the Umpqua River
sold for $180.50.
Several fish decoys by Frank Mizera were sold
including a 7-3/4" white/red head & trim and EX for $406, and a black
fish with gold fish decorations in EX that got 17 bids and topped out
at $1525. Another similar decoy , 9" and EX reached $1125. A bull nose
decoy, red with flower decorations, 4.5" by LeRoy Howell sold for
$710. It was EX-.
Rods:
A collection is being disposed of and that has brought lots of nice
rods on the market. One was a Payne M97L, 7', 2/2, for a 3 weight
line. It was EX and received 17 bids before topping out at $3600.
Another Payne, a M98 made for Abercrombie & Fitch, 7', 2/2, 4 wt, got
26 bids before closing at $3566.06. A Payne M204, 8'6", 3/2 and EX
brought $3600. A Gillum 8'6", 2/2, 6/7 wt restored to EX sold for
$4349.99. A Phillipson Premium, 8'6", 3/2, 5 wt and Mint sold
for $610. A Phillipson Ed Hunter model, 8'6", 3/2 and VG brought
$256.75. A Heddon M35 Deluxe Featherweight Peerless, 8', 2/2, 5 wt,
restored to Mint brought $1250. An Orvis Flea Rod, 6'6", 2/2 and EX
reached $811.01. A Winchester #6096 - 9', 3/2 and VG sold for $280. A
Walton Powell, 8'3", 2/3, and EX reached $785.90. A Butte Montana rod
made by Beaty, 9'8", 3/2 and VG sold for $425.
Big rods included a
Shakespeare Superba double built bamboo fly rod, 9', 3/2 with fighting
butt and EX that sold for $143.50. A Mills & Sons Standard, 9', 3/2
steelhead rod with fighting butt and EX brought $256.
An Airex
spinning rod made by Uslan, 6', 2/1 and 5 strip construction and EX
sold for $158.50. A Hopalong Cassidy casting rod with reel and VG sold
for $251.13.
A Herters fiberglass casting rod, 5'6", 2/1 and EX
brought $127.50. An Orvis bamboo casting rod, 70", 2/1 and mint sold
for $305. A Pflueger Bait Casting Kit with Supreme reel, glass casting
rod, line, lures, etc. and VG sold for $255.
