eBay Report - February 2008

One of the more interesting items this month was a very early (c1870s) H. L. Leonard rod made in Bangor ME. It was a 12' rod in 3 pieces, with 2 mid-sections and 3 tips. It had a ratan grip, ring guides, spike ferrules, and was in a wonderful routed out oak case. This very nice antique rod sold for $3282.09 It is shown here.

Other Rods:

A South Bend #290 bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 2/2 and VG brought $242.50. A 7'6" Orvis Madison, 2/1 and EX- sold for $427.76. A Gillum, 9', 2/2 but only G- topped out at $1260. A c1968 San Francisco Winston 8'6", for a 4 wt brought $1026.22. An F.E. Thomas "The Hunter" 9', 3/2 and VG+ reached $246.50.

A c1920-22 Heddon #6 bamboo casting rod, 5', 2/1, and EX sold for $152.50. An Orvis 6'9" impregnated casting rod for 1/4 oz lures and mint brought $218.50.

Fiberglass rods included a Garcia Conlon fiberglass spinning rod model 2110B, 6'6", 2/1 and mint reached $138.05. A Fenwick FF53 2/1 and EX sold for $280. Another Fenwick, an FF755, 7'6" in mint sold for $178.02. A Phillipson EF-60, 6' fly rod, 2/2 for a 6 wt and EX brought $290.50. A St. Croix Magna Flex Travel Rod with 3 handles, and tips to make it a spinning, casting, or fly rod at maximum of 7', and mint in a sheepskin case brought $191.50. An Abercrombie & Fitch Passport fiberglass rod, 4'6", 10 pieces that fit into a small case, in Mint sold for $456.

Reels:

There were some pretty nice older Kentucky style casting reels up for auction. Including a B. C. Milam #5 in VG. It had a 12:00 half crank, as pictured here, and sold for $3250. A Meek & Milam #1 size, with 1889 presentation engraving and VG also brought a nice price at $3308.98. A Hadden miniature Meek casting reel, German silver #17, mint in its wooden box brought $625. An Al Foss Easy Control #3, EX in a marked leather case sold for $430.87. A Pflueger raised pillar Quadruple reel in German silver and VG sold for $370. A Montague Jupiter German silver reel that was EX in a VG box reached $311.99.

Antique reels included a Liberty Bell reel #250A, in VG that sold for $333.28. An Edw. V. Hofe patent 1884, so called 1st click reel in VG brought $610.  A William Shakespeare Jr. Style C level wind in VG brought $405. 

More modern casting reels included one of 500 Ambassadeur 5500CDLs, grey color and Mint in a Teak box, that brought $3426.99. A Shakespeare Supra, model 1975, mint in a wooden box sold for $280. It is shown to the left. An Arjon Champion #180 which was EX in its leather case sold for $555.

Miscellaneous reels included an Allcock Aerial, 3.5" and EX sold for $333.87. An Everol 12/0 big game reel with lever drag and EX- brought $455. An ABU Matic #130 orange and black spincast reel in VG+ sold for $283.

Fly reels were led off by an Edward Vom Hofe 2/0 model 423 in hard rubber and German silver and EX, which sold for $1665. A Rochester Ideal #1 that was EX in a G+ box reached $260. A brass revolving plate raised pillar 2" diameter fly reel brought $431.

In the reel gadget category, a Bishop level wind attachment in decent shape on a junker Montague reel sold for $384.99. And finally, a Pflueger Monarch maroon box only in VG brought $113.50.

Lures:

February ended with the sale of a rare Chapman Safe Deposit Minnow, marked Theresa NY, and 4½" long for $8786. It is shown to the right. Another Chapman & Sons winged type bait from Rochester, NY in EX brought $1580. There was some other nice metal baits sold this month that are listed down further.

There were some high dollar Moonlight/Paw Paw baits this month. A Paw Paw Platypuss in natural frog and EX- sold for $442.03. A Moonlight Musky Little Wonder, 10" long, but in bad shape, in a pike? scale brought $865. A Moonlight 5 hook minnow in Perch and Good sold for $685, while a Lady Bug Wiggler #803, EX- and green & white bug reached $406.90. 

Other interesting lures included a Stan Gibbs GTS-3 Trolling Swimmer in herring color and EX in an EX box reached $475.01. An Edgar's Lucky Strike Minnow, luminous color and G in a G box sold for $860. A rainbow Immell Chippewa Minnow in EX- brought $725.99. A Keeling Musky Expert, yellow/green back sold for $745, while a Biff Master Plus, gold/red head and EX in an EX box reached $750. A Keeling Scout in blended colors that was EX-in a VG box/papers brought $761.

Heddon stuff included an early Dowagiac Minnow #10 called an Artistic Minnow by the seller, in strawberry spot, that was VG in a VG white box, and sold for $860. A true Artistic Minnow in sienna crackleback and EX in a VG box sold for $795. A 400 Minnow with sienna top and EX brought $587.77. A Shrimpy Spook #9008RH, W/RH & glitter, VG in a G box reached $250. A checkered version of the Heddon Hi-Tail in EX sold for $361.33. A Box ONLY for a Punkinseed #40XSK received 32 bids and sold for $761.75, and a Vamp Kingfish KF9750S, strawberry spot and EX, brought $404.

An unusual metal Murray's Aluminum Minnow that was Mint in an EX box brought $541.77. It is pictured to the left and illustrates how Devon style minnow keep being made - for centuries - because they catch fish. A Wiggly-Wriggler metal bait, EX in a VG box topped out at $463.

A Creek Chub Husky Musky #634, blue flash color, and EX sold for $264.99. A silver flash Flip Flap #4418, EX- in a G box brought $270. A Yellow flash #737 Pikie that was Mint in a VG box sold for $368.77. A South Bend Whiz Oreno bass bug that was EX sold for $248.48. 

A couple of Smithwick lures brought good prices - an EX Tootsie Bug in green scale sold for $515.15, and a Stud Duck in green, yellow & red scale and also EX reached $560.

Miscellaneous Stuff:

A really nice old leather rod case took two sales to get the job done, as the first winner didn't pay up, but this 40" tube in VG received 22 bids the second time and sold for $689.98. It is shown here. A FLO-GAF folding gaff in VG brought $124.72. A c1950s Simonsen tackle box in mint condition topped out at $250. A fair condition green Winchester #9520 belt bait box sold for $400. 4 Pennell 6/0 blind eye salmon hooks in EX brought $367 - Holy Cow!.

A spool of Newton Princess Pat big game line, VG in a Poor box, reached $224.50. Two spools (only- no line) of Jamison Special line  in the original box brought $315.05. A spool of Hall's Invincible Bass & Tarpon line, in an unopened wrapped spool with VG label sold for $168.

A Makinen Wonderlure "Guide Pinback in EX sold for $100.99. A Silver fishing scene match safe in VG- brought $259.50. A toy 55 HP Mercury outboard motor in VG sold for $317.72. A really nifty Cat Cay Key Tuna Trophy from 1935 of a brass tuna on a black marble base reached $643.87.

A small (11" long x 4" dia) double ended glass minnow trap in VG reached $540.99. A Johnson Glass Co. small quart size minnow trap in EX/papers sold for $315. A Submarine Minnow Bucket, green and VG brought $288.59.

A 6¾" Bar Lake fish decoy, perch color and VG, sold for $405. An Ernie Newman 7" sucker fish decoy, R/W head and Y spots and EX brought $455. A shiner scale Heddon 4 point decoy, EX- in VG- box topped out at $763. The fish shaped brass fish chummer shown to the left brought $465.

A 1946 P & K lure catalog in VG brought $100.99. A Millsite Tackle catalog from 1947? and EX sold for $128.50. A F/VG copy of Martin Keane's Classic Rods & Rodmakers reached $188.51.
