eBay Report - July 2003

Wow! What a struggle. A few days ago my hard drive crashed, and all those wonderful tips from readers, and all the good items that I had saved for this report vanished from my computer. Thus, I start by apologizing to those of you who sent me tips, and they aren't here. I have done some research by searching past auctions, and have compiled this abbreviated report

Lures:

Plastic lures drew huge prices again, and older antique lures seemed to be a buyers market. Heading the sales were a couple of Plastic Heddon Big Hedd lures in EX condition. One in orange with red dots brought $1335, and another in green scale color reached $1035. Also a plastic Lucky 13 in TORA (?) Tiger color and EX reached $1009. A Heddon Musky Vamp in Pike Scale, and mint in a VG box sold for $1899.

Contrast those with the 5 hook Shakespeare underwater minnow with gem clip hardware shown to the right. It was mint in a marked wooden box. This classic bait sold for $910. A terrific Shakespeare Waukazoo in the box/papers, all mint, sold for $430. It was white with a red head.

Creek Chub baits that were of interest were an EX Giant Pikie that was in an odd all green color. It brought $750. A VG Bug Wiggler in bug finish reached $600. A Goldfish Peter's Special, EX in a VG box, topped out at $570.89.

A Worden Combination Minnow in G-VG sold for $242.50.

One classic old bait was the star of the month. A Chautauqua Minnow found in an estate, which was in EX condition brought a whopping $12,000. It is pictured to the left.

Reels:

I did have some notes on reels of interest. One seller made a great find in a shed in NJ. There was a B.C. Milam #2 in VG that brought $1120. There were also a pair of Thomas J. Conroy raised pillar multipliers. a 2" model brought $256.99, and a 2.5" sold for $216.28. Another Milam, size 4, in brass and German silver and VG sold for $1525.03. Another classic old reel offered this month was a Thomas Chubb Henshall van Antwerp fly reel. These were patented in 1887-89. This one was inherited from his grandfather by the seller, and sold for $2800.

Spinning reels continue to be hot items. A Dam Quick model VG in the box, with extra spool and line from Germany sold for $1325. This reel is shown to the right. A Mitchell 300DL, with gold trim and in a wooden presentation box, in EX sold for $1250. A French Doper spinning reel c1941 and in VG brought $255. A Stadler-Merit oddball spinning/casting reel in G-VG reached $222.38

A Billinghurst fly reel with an 1859 patent, and in VG condition sold for $1500. A Carlton Lightweight fly reel in EX sold for $169.27. a Montague 80 yd hard rubber and nickel plated brass frame, that was VG in a G box sold for $292.50. A Carlton Automatic/papers in VG sold for $132.50.

Some casting reels were a Carlton 9X in VG which reached $260.01, a Round Pillar Meisselbach Take Apart with broken click, o/w G-VG at $212.50, A Talbot Star from Kansas City, MO brought $455, and a Hardy Silex Major with brass foot and G-VG that sold for $610.

A J.A. Coxe California big game reel that was G-VG, but a rare size, reached $2500.

Rods:

a Payne #97 bamboo fly rod that was 7', 2/2, and professional restored to EX sold for $2876.03. A 7' Leonard Tournament in VG 3/2, reached $1950.

A Phillipson 6' fiberglass fly rod in EX sold for $158.39. A Fenwick Lunkerstix #2000, 5.5' heavy action and EX reached $400.

Miscellaneous Fishing items:

A 1922 South Bend catalog in EX sold for $306.99 after 21 bids. A George Lawrence #15 creel with the harness, and all leather tooled sold for $2340. The creel was in EX condition, and is shown here.

A Joy glass minnow trap in a cardboard box came up. It was all VG, except for some chipping around the lid. The trap has sold new at Sears Roebuck for $1.39. In 2003 it brought $144.99. A Canvas folding minnow bucket that was good condition reached $66.00. and finally 14 split shot tins that were all fairly common and VG-EX sold for $31.10.

Again, thanks to all who sent in tips for this report, and I'm sorry that they weren't lost. I hope that this report makes it OK into cyberspace, for I'm working with very limited resources. We'll be back next month with a full report.
