It was a good month for frogs...
Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff:
This
category had several nice items this month. Among them was the Match
Safe shown to the right. It was in EX condition, and marked "Sterline",
which was the manufacturer's trade name for German Silver. It brought
$281.50. A New Jersey Fish & Game Commissioner's Badge, made for H. J.
Burlington (it was the first such Commissioner's badge) that was in VG
sold for $787.77.
A rare copy of Angling in the Lakes of Northern Illinois,
by Chas. Johnson, 1896 and fine condition sold for $203.59. A 14 x 18
inch color photo of Zane Grey fishing, in VG condition, reached $750,
while a 1st Edition of Zane's Tales of Fishing Virgin Seas that
was VG in a poor jacket reached $340.01.
A Creek Chub Bait Co. 1934 catalog in EX condition brought $380. It
was followed by a Heddon Catalog from 1924 that was still in the
mailer. In VG condition, this catalog went for $670. A
Bronson/Symploreel catalog from 1934 in EX sold for $132.50, while a
Meisselbach dealer catalog from the late 1930s and VG brought $275.
An
unusual item was a VG example of a Le Jay Electrol early electric
trolling motor. It is shown to the left, and sold for $167.50. A
Case XX Fly Fisherman's knife in VG brought $167.49. A Mint Puma
fisherman's knife brought $96.
A large green
glass "Jumbo" minnow trap that was EX in the original box sold for
$371.66. A rectangular glass trap, 5x5x14" and VG sold for $118.50 A
Mic-Mac Indian creel or basket from California and VG sold for $255.
A Wooden box only for a Shakespeare #33 Minnow in EX
reached $1313.
Rods:
An Orvis Superfine 6' bamboo fly rod in one piece in mint condition
drew 18 bids and topped out at $1525. A Horrock's-Ibbotson Princess
7'6", 2/1, for a 4 weight line that had been restored to mint sold for
$355. A Heddon 7'6" #10 Featherweight Blue Waters, 2/2, and EX brought
$510. A South Bend Cross Double Built #266, 8'6", 3/2 and EX reached
$286. An Orvis Limestone Special, 8'6", 2/2 and mint, sold for
$871.01.
A Payne bamboo combination spin/fly rod (I didn't know they
made such a thing), 6'3", 2/1 and EX brought $660.
Fiberglass rods
included a Phillipson salmon fly rod with the Abercrombie & Fitch
monogram on it, 9', 3/2 for an 8 wt. and EX, which reached $187.50. A
Browning Silaflex Executive Pack, which included a 7'6" fly rod, 6'
spinning rod and 6' baitcasting rod, all new in bags and in a 25"
aluminum marked tube brought $482.77.
Casting rods included a
Thomas 5'6" bamboo Model FE391, 2/2, which was mint in the tube and
sold for $322.77. A Fenwick Feralite FC65 casting rod with a
Featherweight All Angle handle sold. It was 6'6", 2/1 and EX and
brought $404. A metal casting rod with an unusual Nelson Pistol Grip
handle in EX sold for $191.50. The rod was 4'6".
Lures:
There were lots of
good miscellaneous maker lures this month. The Judas Frog, shown to
the right, that was Mint in an EX box topped out at $265.78. A Lurette
glass Crawfish & Frog Holder that was EX in a VG box sold for $1225. A
pair of Moonlight Picaroons in EX condition came up - a pike scale
brought $175, and a week later a rainbow colored one reached $736.77.
A Thoren Minnow Chaser in scale color and EX sold for $560. A Biff
Bait Go Devil Biff that was EX in an EX picture box brought $431.99.
It was splatter color. A Hookzem Weedless Lure, white with red head,
and EX reached $281. A Wilson Fluted Wobbler that was EX in an EX box
sold for $327. A Winchester 5 hook Minnow in Parrot color and VG sold
for $455. An EX original signed Fred Young Big O in green splatter
over yellow topped out at $485. A Glass Minnow tube by an unknown
maker that was in EX brought $456, while a VG Welch & Graves tube,
3.5" sold for $786.90. A Stan Gibbs display card with 5 Darter Lures
in EX brought $373.44. A Jamison Nemo in white and EX reached $427.50
A Pflueger 3 hook Neverfail Minnow
in green crackleback and EX in a VG 4 Brothers box reached $614. A
five hook Neverfail in Rainbow and in a similar 4 Brothers box brought
$810, while a 5 hooker in luminous that was EX in a VG blue canoe box
sold for $575.89. A scarce Pflueger Wizard c1903, green back, and EX
in a G wooden box sold for $1850.
Shakespeare Baits included a Rhodes 5 hook Minnow,
green back and EX, that sold for $528.77. A South Bend Fish-Oreno #953
that was rainbow color and Mint in an EX box with tag sold for $208. A
Paw Paw Casting Bait, scale finish, and mint in an EX box sold for
$207.59.
A Creek Chub Bait Co. Pikie Minnow #700 in Tiger Stripe and
VG sold for $320.85. A Jigger in frog spot that was EX in the
box/papers sold for $304.99.
A Heddon Luny Frog in meadow frog that
was EX in a VG box/tags sold for $315. A red & white Luny in the
closed leg version that was EX in a VG box sold for $510. A #20 Minnow
in rainbow color that was EX in a G box brought $627.06. An Expert "Slopenose"
with friction 1 pin collar, white/blue nose and EX sold for $650. It
was c1906. A Salmon River Runt, EX in an EX box and Silver Scale
Color, brought $449.44. A Mint in VG box/paper Vampire in pike scale
color reached $560.01.
Metal lures included a
Buel Spinner from Whitehall, NY. It was a Kidney pattern in VG and
sold for $480. An Al Foss Little Egypt Wiggler that was EX in a VG
picture box received 25 bids before selling for $380.55. An frog color
Outing Du Getum, that was mint in an EX box/papers
As you can
see, it was a big month for frogs. We started with a frog bait, so
lets end with a frog. This one was a Stage Frog c1919 in Yellow
splatter and VG, which brought $455. It is shown to the left.
Reels:
Fly reels included
a 4" brass British salmon reel that was engraved "Reg. 1843, J. Jones,
London". It was in VG condition and sold for $419.17. A Seamaster Mark
III salt water fly reel in VG+ condition topped out at $1225. It is
shown to the right. The largest size (100 yard) Pflueger Hawkeye in VG
reached $809. An Edward Vom Hofe Tobique #504, 4/0 salmon fly reel in
EX in a marked Wm. Mills leather case brought $2657.77. An Abbey &
Imbrie raised pillar fly reel, 1-7/8" in diameter and described as
"made out of silver" (which was nickel plated brass) sold for $1324.
An A. L. Walker 3" in EX sold for $2329. A Fin Nor "Wedding Cake" #3
in EX brought $1500.
Big game reels included a Kovalovsky 9/0 reel in EX condition. It was
bid to $3250.
An old 2" brass clamp style multiplier with lever
stop, in VG condition brought $306. A Fredrick vom Hofe and Son 2-7/8"
nickel plated brass ball handle reel in VG sold for $786.01.
Casting reels included an Arjon
Champion in EX with it's leather case and a fair box/papers, which
sold for $1225. A Shakespeare 1897 Style C level wind reel in VG
condition sold for $613. A Talbot trade reel marked "Tomahawk Tim for
VIM, Chicago" came up. Unfortunately, it had missing parts (which will
undoubtedly soon be restored), but still sold for $818.
Among more modern reels was an ABU Ultra
Mag XLIII (the reel used by tournament long casters) in VG condition.
It sold for $251. A Shimano Bantam 100 that was EX in an EX box
brought $159.15. An ABU Record Sport 2100, EX in a VG box reached
$423. An ABU Garcia
Ambassadeur
5500 that was mint in a VG box topped out at $330.05. A Pflueger
Supreme Model CK type S in bronze color and VG reached $293 even with
some boat rash on the rims.
Finally, one of the weird ones - A
Stalder-Merit pivoting reel that looks like a casting reel, but is a
fixed spool reel, came up at auction. It was in EX condition and sold
for $336. It is shown to the left.
