THE eBay Report - June 2008

by Phil White

Salmon derby memorabilia was popular this month...

Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff

A Port Angeles (Washington) Salmon Derby red hat from 1952 in VG condition started off the month by selling for $76.50. Take a look to the left. Also sold for big dollars was an advertising lot from an Astoria, OR salmon derby. It included a 15 x 22 inch sign and a pinback, with both in EX condition. They sold for $427.

A nice Shakespeare store rod rack advertising glass Wonderods in VG brought $53.88.

A nice Falls City blue colored minnow bucket (only) in VG brought $143.50.

A Jolley spring hook, new in tube/papers, sold for $162.50. A box of Allcocks double turned up eye, Japanned salmon hooks with both box and hooks in mint condition brought $406.56. What was listed as an early American Fur Trade fish hook (don't ask me, I only report on this stuff) that was 2¾ inches long and in EX condition sold for $202.50. It is shown to the right.

A William Mills hardback store copy catalog from 1902 in fine condition sold for $125.50. An EX copy of a 1939 Heddon catalog reached $153.50.

Reels:

A couple of Arjon reels did OK, with a green Fighter model in EX reaching $718.22 (photo to the right), and an EX dark red Champion topping out at $520.   Another modern baitcaster, a Heddon Heritage, that was NIB sold for $158.25. A Shakespeare President II #1980 and EX in box received 29 bids before selling for $315. A Record #2300 Model C that was EX in a VG box/papers reached $256.01.

Older casting reels included an Al Foss Easy Control 3-25, missing the crank nut o/w in EX condition, in a marked leather case, which brought $500. A Pflueger Redifor clamshell BOX ONLY, c1910-1915, in VG sold for $500. A Wm. Talbot #35 in EX reached $1125.

A 3" Allcock Aerial Popular in VG condition sold for $325. A brass stop latch multiplying reel in VG brought $151.

A Yawman & Erbe brass automatic fly reel that was EX in a poor box and still had the instructions plus a rare catalog sold for $326.

Fly reels were led off by a 2/0 Model 400 Otto Zwarg Laurentian salmon reel in EX condition which reached $1582.57. Another large salt water fly reel, a Seamaster Mark II that was in EX- sold for $1400. It is pictured to the right. A Farlow salmon fly reel that was EX in a labeled block leather case reached $255.

Lures:

It is interesting that even with the new interest in modern and plastic lures, the Heddon name is still among the most collectible. However, as lure collectors know better than I do, Bagley lures have really shot to the top. Back in the 1970s I struck up a nice relationship with Bagley and got lots of baits at wholesale prices. I well remember getting a whole carton of Bagley Rat Finks to test on our Idaho and Oregon bass. I wonder what happened to them all? This month another of my favorites to fish with - the Diving Bang-O-Lure did rather well. The DB06 pictured to the left received 31 bids before selling for $1301.76. As you can see it was in mint condition. I never did have that color.

A Pflueger Pal-O-Mine Jr, black with a white head and in EX condition brought $350. A Neverfail Minnow, green crackleback and EX- in a G 4-Bros maroon box sold for $402.

Shakespeare produced a wowser this month with an aluminum Revolution that was EX in a VG black box/instruction sheet. This package received 29 bids before selling for $5200. A neat old Shakespeare rubber frog, 4" long and VG sold for $512. A Creek Chub Bait Co. Gar, green gar, and EX- in a VG box brought $465.

Other maker lures included A Smithwick Devils Horse Stud in butterfly yellow, but with pointers, so VG, which brought $217. It is shown to the right.  An Outing Bassy Getum that was brownish color and VG which sold for $227.50. A Tempter Frog in EX reached $306.99, while a Bud Stewart Muskrat with genuine fur sold for $265. A Clark's Goofy Gus, white and VG+ in a plastic box/papers topped out at $150.27.  A Charles Bew Chicago Spinner metal bait in EX reached $338.67.

An EX Heddon Giant Runt in Yellow shore minnow brought $760. Later in the month a Giant Runt in white/red eyes and tail and VG sold for $228.50. A Multiple Minnow, nickel and EX, sold for $305. A Dummy Double#1505 in fancy spot, or strawberry, with pinned football rig and EX- reached $938.53. A Black Shore Chugger Spook in EX sold for $280, while a Chugger Jr in yellow black bird and VG reached $372.70. A Lucky 13 Spook in Yellow Shore/scale belly (?) and EX brought $1179.  A #759P River Runt Runtie, wood, and mint in a VG box sold for $511.

Rods:

There were a few nice buys in bamboo fly rods this month, including a Heddon Premier 8', 3/1 (one tip missing), EX which brought only $290. An Edwards Bristol FB7, 9', 3/2 in unfished condition reached $300. An 8' Hardy CC deFrance, 3/2 in EX sold for $1025. A Uslan 7'6", 2/2, 6 wt in VG reached $425. A Leonard M50½ 8'6", 3/2 and VG sold for $620.

A Fenwick fiberglass salt water rod, FS856, 8'6", 2/1, and mint sold for $142.50.

A Heddon #6 "Jim Heddon's Favorite" bamboo casting rod, 5', 2/2, topped out at $255. A Heddon #900 Musky Special bamboo, 5'6", 2/1 in EX brought $205.61.

Many thanks to Ben Wright, Frank Knapp, Dan Basore, and a new helper Jerry Hundley who will hopefully keep me posted on Smithwick doings.

Be careful what you wish for - last month we still hadn't had spring. As I write this it is almost 100 degrees. However, the smallmouth were hitting great in the river last week, with an 18" fish boated.
