Rods:
The highlight of this section was the sale of a Russ Peak
fiberglass fly rod of
historical
importance. The rod was new and had never had a reel on it. It had
been cast without putting the reel in the seat and wearing rubber
gloves. This was a 7', 2/1, hand made rod and it sold for $3210. This
beautiful glass rod is shown to the right.
Other fiberglass rods included an Abercrombie & Fitch spinning rod
made by Payne brought $177.80. It was 6'7", 2/1 and EX condition. A
Heddon Pal Spook casting rod #1M, 5' with gold plated metal
fittings and EX sold for $257, while a Pal spinning rod #7555, 7', 2/1
and mint in a mint tube reached $215.50.. A Phillipson Aristo casting rod model
A64LS, 6'4", 2/1 light action and EX zoomed to $624. A Harnell black
fiberglass boat rod, 7'6" and EX sold for $137.50. An R. L. Winston
fiberglass fly rod, 8', 2/1 and EX sold for $489.60. A Shakespeare
Howald Wonder Rod #1380T (trout), 9', 3/1 and VG reached $150.
Bamboo rods included a J. C. Higgins (Sears) #3001 fly rod, 9', 3/2 in
EX that brought $170.49. An Abbey & Imbrie (H-I trade rod) 9', 3/2 and
EX in its form case sold for $141.48. A Herter's 8', 2/2 in VG reached
$227.56. A wonderful antique Divine, 9'6", 3/2 and EX brought $510. An
Orvis SuperLight spinning rod, 5', 2/1 and EX sold for $294. A Heddon
Deluxe casting rod, 5'6", 2/1 and VG brought $213.58, and a Heddon #1
"Dollar Rod", 5', 2/1 ironwood & split bamboo casting rod restored to
EX reached $179.39.
A True Temper
Uni-Spin fiberglass rod/reel combination #107, 6', 4/1 and EX sold for
$230.
Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff:
A really neat bronze fishing creel inkwell in EX condition received
42 bids before
selling
for $539.99. It is shown here. A Montague Ferrule and thread display
case with contents and VG+ sold for $203.59. A Jim Beam catfish
decanter in mint brought $102.50. A Chicago Casting Club medal c1930
and EX reached $214.50. A Field & Stream tuna Honor Badge in EX
brought $382.97. A "Fish Ohio" award pin from 1982 in VG sold for
$167.50.
A fine condition, first edition of Dick Spurr's book Classic Bamboo Rodmakers sold for $204.37.
A 1932 Shakespeare catalog in VG topped out at $175.75. A copy of the
Kimball's The Fish Decoy, 1st Edition, signed and numbered, in
Fine condition sold for $142.50. A Penn catalog #7 in Good brought
$71.40.
A Winchester split shot tube #9135 in VG brought $230.27. An
older version Randall ice decoy in green scale and VG reached $223. A
perch Heddon 4 point decoy in VG sold for $1006. A
Marbles 3' long spring auto gaff in VG sold for $405.09. A B.F. Meek &
Sons tackle box in VG with all trays seemed a good buy at $189.50.
Reels:
An antique brass English single action reel with spike and
wingnut fastener in VG sold for $610.03. It is shown below. A German silver Meek & Milam #3
casting reel
with numbered screws, and VG
brought $2000. A 1st model Pflueger Supreme in VG reached $257.02. A
VG- Ocean City Striker level wind reel sold for $192.50.
Fly reels
included a tiny Meisselbach Featherlight #260 raised pillar with
nickel plating and VG that sold for $773.63. A Billinghurst in VG
reached $2000. A Wm. Read & Sons hard rubber & German silver 2¼",
EX condition fly reel reached $355. An Atlantic Salmon Lee Wulff
Ultimate Fly Reel by Farlow of England, mint in a leather pouch, sold
for $965.55. A left hand Hardy St. George in 3" trout size and
Spitfire finish, NIB brought $1300. An Edward Vom Hofe Restigouche 6/0
salmon fly reel, GS/HR, VG in leather case sold for $1525. A
Leonard Bi-Metal, 1-5/8" and EX brought $1475.
A Cycloid Micromatic casting reel with maroon
sideplates and NIB sold for $256. An ABU Ambassadeur 5000CDL, mint in
wooden box/papers, reached $1585. A Shakespeare Bi-Centennial red,
white & blue casting reel in EX brought $131.38.
A
Winchester #2944 - 300 yard raised pillar salt water size multiplier,
nickel plated, that was VG in a poor box brought $276.
Lures:
A frog colored South Bend Plug-Oreno, VG+ in a VG box sold for
$304.22. An Abbey & Imbrie Bucktail Killer (by South Bend) in rainbow,
that was EX in a G+ box brought $687.50. A Shakespeare 3 hook
underwater Minnow in blended red and VG brought $320.57. An EX
Shakespeare frogskin bait sold for $227.50. A large size Paw Paw
Bonehead Minnow, orange/red spots and EX in box reached $277.76.
Miscellaneous maker lures were highlighted by an EX- R&W Donaly
Catchumbig that sold for $610.80. It didn't bring the biggest price,
but a very pretty Schaefer
Turbulent lure in EX
sold for $456. It is pictured to the right. A Haas Live Minnow, 4"
silver, and VG sold for $338.76, while a Haas Live Bug-Beetle, W/RH
and VG, reached $332.76. An unpainted Ackerman 5 hook minnow in VG,
c1906, sold for $1576.34. A Dunk's Swim-A-Lure in Chipmunk colors and
VG brought $260. A salt water Cooper Goo Goo Eye Husky Dude, yellow
with black swirl and new in a plastic bag brought $275. (Can't you
just see that surf caster with the 30 pound striper saying "Oh yeah, I
got him on my Goo Goo Eye Husky Dude."). A black & white herringbone
Arbogast Jitterbug in EX received 25 bids before selling for $710. A
Smithwick Gandy Dancer, G to VG in yellow shore minnow, reached $363.
It was a good month for Keeling collectors - a HICO, rainbow, EX in an
EX box sold for $750; a Baby Tom, gold/red head, also EX in an EX box,
brought $450; a Pike Kee-Wig, same color and also EX in an EX box
reached $640; and a Flapper, yellow/black scale, same condition,
topped out at $660.
There was a field day for collectors of Heddon
Tiny Torpedos. A Pink frog? colored one in mint brought $280; a yellow
tiger in EX reached $342; and a clear one with blue blotches in EX
topped out at $255. I assume these must have been made for the
Japanese market. A 2¼" Punkinseed in a
grey scale, but only VG-, reached $787.77. A plastic Lucky 13 #2500,
white/strawberry spots, and EX in a VG box sold for an amazing $1425.
A Heddon Pearl Spindiver #3009P, EX in a VG box, sold for $730. A
rainbow Near Surface Minnow, EX in an EX box reached $930.
Metal stuff
included an American Spinner in Sunburst patter and VG that brought
$283. A Winchester #9612 spinner that was mint in an EX box sold for
$870. Shown to the left is a John Pepper Batwing Spinner, patent 1893
and VG. It sold for $1156.
Creek Chub lures of note included a
Plunker #3200 in a no-scale perch finish and EX which sold for $560. A
Deep Dive Pikie, W/RH & glitter over night glow, and EX in an EX-box
brought $255.02. A Baby Jigger in dace and EX in a VG box reached
$274.99. A Crawdad in the beautiful Western Auto colors and EX sold
for $430.11. A Pikie #700 in pike scale, VG+ in a fair old picture box
topped out at $820.
