eBay Report - May 2006

I guess lure collectors took time out to get their breath after Lang's terrific lure auction, but reel and rod collectors were hard at it.

Reels:

There were several nice NY style reels, with a George Karr ball handle in VG reaching $1025. It was described as a brass "prototype", but sure looked German silver in the photos. It is shown to the right. A Conroy brass ball handle reel that was 1-7/8" wide and VG sold for $1725.

There were lots of interesting reels from the UK this month, starting with a Hardy Bougle, 3", in VG that received 30 bids before selling for $1913. A Malloch pivoting spin reel that appeared to be a multiplier and was in EX sold for $4072.01. A Hardy 4-1/2" brass & Ebonite salmon fly reel with GS rims and VG reached $460. A brass clamp winch in EX sold for $601.89. A Scottist Alex Martin "Thistle" fly reel, 3" in diameter and EX brought $241.36. A brass Loch Trolling reel with raised pillars and 4-1/4" in diameter reached $807.67. It had an unbalanced crank and was made in London, c1885. A 12 spoke Allcock Aerial in VG sold for $466.01.

The Magic odd ball spinning reel always attracts lots of attention, but one in EX broke the barrier as it sold for $202.50. Wow!

Big reels included a Pflueger Templar that was EX in a VG box with papers, which sold for $187.37. An early Pflueger SW reel of German silver and hard rubber, 350 yards, and VG reached $432. An Ocean City Panama 10/0 BG reel in VG brought $328.89. A 6/0 Kovalovsky BG reel in VG sold for $2325.

Fly reels were numerous and nice. And one that was unusual was the Manton of Calcutta, 3-1/2" German silver fly reel that is shown to the left. It was in EX condition and sold for $406. A Julius vom Hofe raised pillar, 2" wide nickel plated brass example in EX brought $545.50. A Pflueger Medalist #1492 with round line guide from the 1930s, but only fair condition with 75% of the finish gone from the rims sold for $255. Leonard Bi-Metals were springing up everywhere. One was listed as being patented by "Phil Brook and Paine". It was VG and brought $2805. Another was an EX, 2-1/4" 2nd model and reached $3050. An Edward vom Hofe #423 Salmon reel in VG brought $1352. An Acme wire frame fly/utility reel c1884 in VG reached $415.02.

Casting reels included a Horton Meek #2 that was EX in a poor box and sold for $875. Another Horton Meek, a #3 tournament reel with an usual black spool, pivoting oil port covers, and screw adjustment bearings in VG- condition sold for $1176. A scarce Talbot #43 in EX brought $1325. What's in a name? A Bronson Invader #26 in EX sold for $401, while the same reel (with leather case and poor box) but marked J. A. Coxe Invader #26 brought $481. A hand made Jack Welch in EX reached $908.01. A Heddon No. 4-18 in VG closed out at $1803.
