Rods:
I continue to be amazed as the Japanese keep
buying longer fiberglass bait casting rods. Shipping is often close to
$100 if a one piece rod. Some examples this past
month were a
Phillipson Swamp Fox 2 pc baitcaster #DC601H (shown here) that reached
the stratosphere at $1136. A seller reported his Heddon Superlative 6’
light action that was EX in bag, brought $358.53 despite the photos
not showing up in the sale. A Fenwick 2 pc, 6 ˝ foot Feralite in EX
for $355 and a Fenwick Lunkerstik #2000, 6’, which topped out at
$317.23.
In more classic rod sales, a Gary Howells 8 ˝
foot bamboo fly rod, 2/2, 6-7 wt, and in Mint condition brought $2400.
A Winston 8’, 3/2, 5 wt in Mint condition reached $1800, and a Hardy
Marvel, 7 ˝ foot, 3/2 for a 4 wt line, and EX brought $1285.
Miscellaneous
A Shakespeare “Pig”
glass minnow trap in a wooden shipping box and in EX condition sold
for $1026. It is shown in the photo to the left.
A very nice all metal toy Johnson 75 outboard
motor received 19 bids and sold for $401. A rather beat up Edward vom
Hofe tackle box with leather covering reached $182.50. Three silver
fish c1881 sold for $356.01. A very nice Winchester line spool in
VG-EX condition with no hole punched in the label brought $334.76. An
EX Victorian fishing match safe received 15 bids before selling for
$152.50. Finally, a Job Johnson 1847 patented Spring Hook in VG
condition sold for $250.
Reels
A beautiful Four
Bros. Delite in a scarce maroon box was a highlight this month. (shown
to the right). It was a 60 yard model in EX condition, with the VG
box, and topped out at $676.69 after 17 bids. An unmarked Leonard
Mills aluminum and hard rubber trout reel in VG-EX condition sold for
$1476. A Pflueger Golden West fly reel, 80 yards, and in VG condition
brought $380. (These reels seem to have stabilized in value) A Hardy
Brass faced Perfect in the smallest size, 3-1/8 inches, and in EX
condition brought $1860. This reel was c1900. The Meisselbach Allright
in the small #110 is one of the rarest of Meisselbach reels. Two came
up for sale this month. The first one had a broken click spring and
was only G condition, but it sold for $660. Another one came up a week
later, that was in VG condition and sold for $920. A Meisselbach
Amateur with front click in VG condition brought $381.
A nice raised pillar salmon fly reel, made of
German silver and hard rubber that was labeled “Old Brass Reel”,
brought $294.99. Another GS and HR salmon reel by Julius vom Hofe for
Dame, Stoddard & Kendall of Boston, was sold. It was a #3 size and in
EX condition in a VG leather case and brought $1901 after 23 bids. A
highly sought after Edward vom Hofe Restigouche salmon reel in 4/0
size was sold. These are hard rubber and German silver, and this one
was VG and brought $2125.
A
really neat Kosmic baitcaster came up for sale this month (photo on
the left). It was German silver and hard rubber construction, c1895,
and in EX condition. It brought $1028. A Kentucky style raised pillar
multiplying reel, made of German silver and was an 80 yard size. It
brought $521. A hard rubber and nickel plated brass multiplier by Wm.
Shakespeare Jr. c1910, 80 yard size in VG condition, sold for $273. A
VG condition Carlton 4 multiplier casting reel, 80 yard size, topped
out at $326. Then a Carlton 9X multiplier that was OK except for
having a couple of pieces missing from the black hard rubber spacer in
the headplate, brought a remarkable $545. A high quality Hendryx reel
made of German silver, with hard rubber click button and nice knurling
and EX condition, sold for $358. A Meisselbach Okeh #620 that was EX
in the box with pouch sold for $264. A B.C. Milam & Sons #4 size
German silver reel in VG-EX condition sold for $900. A gold colored
Ambassadeur 5000D in mint condition brought $1135.74.
A Winchester #2647, German silver and hard rubber
200 yard Salt Water reel that was in VG condition sold for $242.50. An
early unmarked 4/0 tarpon reel with Blackburn drag (drag pat. 1907)
brought $787. It was in VG condition. A beautiful Alcedo Micron, new
in box, got 18 bids and sold for $306.77. An Indiana style reel, by S.
L. Kuntz Mfg. Co. and in VG condition sold for $202.50
Lures:
A highlight this
month was a Creek Chub Bait Co. Fly Rod Crippled Minnow #F90 that was
new on the card and in a VG box. This rare fly rod bait brought $4850.
A CCBC Gar Minnow in special order color yellow/gold scale and in EX
condition sold for $1200. One of those CCBC Dealer Lure Boxes that was
empty, but in EX condition sold for $405. It was for the Crawdad bait.
A South Bend #903RSF (redside scale) 3 hook
underwater minnow that was EX in the box brought $293. A Shakespeare
Rhodes 3 hook underwater minnow, white with red head and tail, and in
EX sold for $367.99. A Paw Paw Wounded Trout in Rainbow Trout was one
of the prettiest baits this month. It was in VG+ condition and brought
$750.
A couple of nice Heddon plastics were a Dowagiac
Spook, GE, Strawberry color, VG+ in the box/papers @ $432.72 and a
Sonic #385-WC (grey/spots) that was EX in a VG box for $235.50. An old
Heddon classic was a Black Sucker #1300, which is a rare five hooker.
It was in G-VG condition and sold for $2500. A #150 underwater minnow
with high forehead, and in the proper wooden box, all VG-EX condition,
and in green crackle back finish sold for $5100.
A
neat bait was a Silver Creek Polly Wog #1010 that was EX in an EX box.
This example brought $885.99. A Horrock’s-Ibbotson Hook & Hold’em
Underwater Minnow (a Pflueger trade minnow) that was VG in the box
brought $685. An unusual lot was seven Charmer minnows – 4 surface and
3 underwater versions. There were spotted heads, midget versions and
three boxes. Most looked in EX condition. The lot sold for $10,000.
Another Misc. bait to come up for sale this month was an Ypsilanti
Minnow in frog color and in VG-EX condition which sold for $271.
An old metal bait, the T. H. Bate Serpentine
Spinner was sold. It was a #3 size, patented 1885, and in VG
condition. It brought $715. Lastly a lot of 70 lures from G to EX in
Box + a display case reached $2508. There’s a guy who is really
quitting the hobby.
