eBay Report - November 2006

[None of the items from the November Lang's Auction are included in this report. They will be reported on in a separate article.]

"I was cleaning out my shed and came across this old reel..."

I believe this is my favorite introduction to an eBay item description. Some times it's just a con game, but many times it has been true. This was the introduction to a very interesting sale by a UK eBayer.

Reels:

The old shed find turned out to be a Hardy original first model Perfect Fly Reel. The reel was brass with the rod in hand logo on the face. It was in VG condition, as are the sellers now, for it sold for $11,366.88. It is pictured to the right. I wonder if more people will start cleaning out their garages and sheds after reading about this sale.

It was a good month for fly reels. Others offered included a Billinghurst brass 3-3/8" model in VG that sold for $2000. A Kanto Bros. (England) aluminum and German silver salmon fly reel in EX that sold for $425.50. A Malloch Sun & Planet 4" brass salmon reel in VG brought $206. A Julius vom Hofe raised pillar, pat. 10-20-03, but only good sold for $494.89. A large brass clamp reel, 3-1/4" in diameter and 3-1/2" wide, in VG sold for $415. The Pflueger collector had a good selection this month as he could choose from a HR/NPbrass Delite in VG for $204.08; A Golden West 60 yd. sandwich GS/HR in VG for $430, and a Hawkeye GS/HR 60 yd in EX for $331.09. A Montague GS/HR 80 yd fly reel in EX reached $450. That auction showed how much times have changed. A Montague trade reel sells for more than a Pflueger in the same configuration.

Salt Water reels included an Imbrie Surf Reel, which is an A. F. Meisselbach & Bro. 1st model surf casting reel c 1911, in EX, which sold for $609. An ABU 9000C that was Mint in an EX- box/accessories reached $156.25. A Bronson/Coxe 5-1/4" big game reel in VG brought $283.88, while another, 9/0 size and EX in a VG box reached $356.

A CCBC Wawasee Indiana style reel with initials scratched into it, o/w EX brought $305.

A rare Wheeler & McGregor level wind reel that was nickel plated brass and G-VG condition sold for $1312. It is pictured to the left. A Chamberlin Cartridge & Target Co Hunter Reel in VG+ brought $300.

More modern casting reels included a Shakespeare Alpha in VG that brought $400 and another in EX- that reached $425. A couple of Shakespeare Sigma Supra reels that were NIB reached $233.50 and $223.50. A red Record Ambassadeur in EX brought $591. An ABU gold Ambassadeur 5000D in EX- condition closed out at $920.

Lures:

There were some nice Creek Chub baits this month, including the Dinger shown to the right. Black with a white head, and EX- it brought $642. A Castrola in Pikie color and VG in a VG box sold for $180.27. A #3304 Sarasota in golden shiner and VG+ reached $416.11. A #7000 in Fireplug that was EX- in a VG box/papers sold for $710. One of the baits I really liked was the Clark Bros. Make 'Em Bite Bait shown to the left. It was in EX condition and a pretty green crackleback with red nose. It sold for $787.76. A Turner Casting Lure, yellow, and only G with chips brought $281.76. Finishing off the interesting lures was a Manitou Minnow that was EX- in a VG box with all the goodies that sold for $1525.

Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff:

I think that everyone needs a bronze pike head fountain. You could have got one this month on eBay. It was French made, 9 x 11 inches and VG condition. It sold for $142.58 and can be seen to the right. Now aren't you sorry you missed that one? I am, and if it had been here in the US I sure would have bid.

Even a bit larger than the pike-head fountain was an Evinrude Elto light twin outboard motor. It was in a factory fitted carrying case and was in VG condition. It sold for $1275. A bit lighter in weight were some nice older Penn Reel catalogs. A #7 catalog from 1939 and EX brought $202.50 and an EX #6 from 1938 reached $272.75.

A Sandy Hook floating minnow bucket, red and VG, brought $190.01. A nice 9.25" pike bobber with spreader on a drop line and VG sold for $125.73.
