Reels:
Leading off the selection of salt water and big game reels was a Penn
International Tournament
Reel
M50. There were 440 of these made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Penn.
It was new in a mahogany box and sold for $2000. An ABU Ambassadeur 9000
that was also NIB brought $640, another - later in the month reached $800. A seldom seen "Hudson 1942" aluminum big
game reel in 10/0 size and EX reached $432.87. It is shown to the right. An
aluminum and stainless steel Kovolovsky 4/0 in VG sold for $4150. A very
clean Perez No. 1 surf reel in a nice box with papers brought $331.
Late 20th century casting reels have reached the heights reserved for
Kentucky reels - An ABU 5500G Gold Ambassadeur that was EX in an EX gold
color box sold for $2805.55. An Ambassadeur 1500C in blue
color and NIB sold for $355. A 5000 from 1956-57 that was EX in case brought
$547. A Lew's Speed Spool BB-1, mint with papers and reel
bag, titled "Limited Lifetime Model" reached $380.75. A Wards Hawthorne
casting reel by Bronson that was EX in its case sold for $455. A Pflueger
2800 free spool, new in the box topped out at $791. An ABU "Morrum MM Gold"
#136/1000, which was mint in a wooden box, reached $446.06. A Shimano
Beastmaster BBM-VR that was new in box sold for $177.50.
Fly reels of interest included an Otto Zwarg 4/0 Saguenay Salmon fly reel
of German silver and hard rubber that was EX and brought $2325. A Heddon
Imperial with agate line guide in a VG taped box that was missing the top
paper stalled out at $266. A 60 yard raised pillar Pflueger Progress with
nickel spool and gun metal frame that was EX in an EX box seemed a bargain
at $177. A Leonard-Mills aluminum and hard rubber raised pillar trout
reel in VG brought $1134.99.
Older multiplying reels of note were an Edward vom Hofe 650 #1 size,
German Silver and hard rubber and EX, which brought $1450. A B.C. Milam #2,
with 12:00 with half handle from the early 1880s and EX sold for $1403.99. A
Milam #3 in the same configuration and VG-EX reached $1181. A scarce
Horton/Bristol #77 level wind reel in EX- sold for $210.58. A very nifty EX-
B. C. Milam #1 sold for $3727. It is pictured to the left. A G. W. Gayle #3
"top hat" style baitcaster in Aluminum and German silver and VG sold for
$2125.
A nice period combo was a VG Cozzone wooden bank reel on what looked like
its original rod - a good condition wooden 9' SW rod. Together they brought
$204.06. A CCBC Wawasee Indiana style reel in EX sold for $510.01
Lures:
Interesting smaller
company baits included a Christiansen Viking Frog that was as new in a VG
box. It sold for $1027.75 and is shown to the right. A Lane's Wagtail that
was brown color with green scale and in VG condition, which brought $225. A
mint in EX box Immell Chippewa in rainbow color topped out at $3638.88. A
Nifty Minne celluloid minnow tube by Joseph Ness, which was in VG condition
reached $1201. A Donaly Jersey Wow, black and gold, and mint in an EX box
sold for $815. A Schroeder's Toro Flite salmon plug in green/gold with a red
head and EX brought $411. An EX Burmek Musky Lure, 7.5", and yellow/red
spots reached $205.83. A C.A. Clark Darter, white/blue spots and Mint sold
for $420.51. An identical lure, but in frog color brought $240. A couple of
VG red and white Clinton Wilt Champions were sold this month. A #50 reached
$1036.03 and a #40 reached $900. A Fin Dingo by Ropher Tackle, EX in box in
perch color sold for $375.01.
A Heddon Salmon River Runt that was EX in a G box with papers sold for
$405.25. It was pearl shore minnow color. A 150 Minnow with surface rig,
white/red eyes & tail, that was EX in an EX box with papers brought $520. A
Spindiver in frog scale color and EX reached $1252.89. A black shore #2100
Crazy Crawler with 2 piece hardware and EX sold for $405. An EX- Hed-On
Basser in goldfish stopped at $327. A 9630 Punkinseed in Smokey Joe color
(?) and EX sold for $1075 and another in golden shiner and EX brought $1136.
A blue River Runt 9XRX in EX with 2 piece hardware reached $327.51 and a
DD0350 in Rainbow Trout that was NIB brought $285.
Pflueger lures of interest included a hole eye Surprise Minnow in perch?
that was EX in a maroon box. It sold for $787.87. A Shakespeare #44 5 hook
minnow in sienna crackleback with plate hook hangers and EX condition
brought $710.
Worthy of it's own
description and photo was a classic Holzworth Expert Minnow, c1901, in
solver color with a black back and in VG condition. It sold for $2325 and is
shown to the left.
A Creek Chub Bait Company Tarpon Pikie in Mullet and VG condition topped
out at $787. A Big Bug Wiggler sold for $405.01. It was gold bug color and
EX-. An interesting auction involved an EX condition early Pikie Minnow in
an EX yellow picture box that was titled by the seller as a South Bend lure.
This pike color lure was still caught by most collectors and brought $2076.
A yellow colored Sucker in EX- sold for $430. A solid red Wiggler that was
EX in an EX box topped out at $521.86. A Fin Tail Shiner, white and VG
brought $222.50.
Miscellaneous Stuff:
A good selling item always brings out more of the same. An example was
the Gunmaster M-1 by Glo-Lure Co. This is catapult type, gun shaped, casting
rod. The first one was without rubber bands and in VG condition. It got 21
bids and sold for $270.51. Another appeared a few weeks later that was
Mint in a VG box. The package contained a Langley Stream-lite reel, practice
plugs, etc. and this one brought $737. According to the seller there were
less than 50 of these items made in the late 1940s.
A nice 1922 Bristol Catalog with Philip Goodwin cover sold for $515. Are
people buying these for the Goodwin cover or the Bristol information? A VG
1937 Edward Vom Hofe catalog topped out at $155.25.A lighted Garcia Service
Center Clock in EX reached $500. I wonder what that Mitchell 300 lighted
clock I used to have would bring today?
An unusual item was a
huge (61" long x 17" wide) landing net in VG condition. It got 18 bids
before selling for $230.39. An Abercrombie & Fitch mahogany tackle box in VG
brought $430. A Hardy Practical Line Dryer in EX reached $442. To go with
your line dryer you could have a #1 Hardy Angler's Knife that was only G for
$354.72, or a #3 size in VG for $300.51. A scarce Von Ferguson mechanical
hook in VG condition sold for $1009. It is shown to the right.
A Useppa Island Izaak Walton Club gold Tarpon pin in EX condition got 27
bids before selling for $234.37. A VG- Bluegill/Pumpkinseed Field & Stream
honor badge sold for $207.50 and a few weeks later another reached $200.50. A Marshall Wells round split shot tin in EX
brought $152.50. A Winchester #8242 line spool that was G+ condition proved
the power of the name as it sold for $179.50. A McSwain glass minnow trap in
EX condition sold for $92. A Submarine Minnow Bucket, green and VG, sold for
$179.25.
Spearing decoys included a Lake St. Clair trout by Harold Rickert. This
13" fish in EX brought $1524. A Slechta copper decoy with copper jigging
stick and EX reached $343.
Rods:
Bamboo fly rods of note included a Pezon & Michel 8'6", 2/1 in VG that
got 22 bids before selling for $450. An 8' Leonard #40, 2/2 for a 4 wt. and
EX reached $1228.05. Nice conditioned South Bend rods are starting to rise
in price: a #323, 9', 3/2 in EX brought $280.99, and a #291, 7'6", 3/2 and
mint reached $510. A Montague Manitou, 9', 3/2 in EX sold for $354. A Wright
& McGill Stream & Lake in EX, 8'6", 3/2 sold for $302.10.
An Edwards Quadrate 7' bamboo spinning rod in VG sold for $177.50. A
Fiberglass Fenwick spinning rod, 7', 2/1 and mint in bag and tube brought
$114.50.
Big Game rods included an F. E. Thomas Special 86" in VG condition that
brought $404.50.
A Heddon Superlative fiberglass casting rod #2270XL, 6' reached $469.99.
