eBay Report - October 2006

Reels:

Once again we learn that pink is not just for babies. A Johnson Pink Princess spincast reel that was new in a good box with papers received 19 bids and sold for $405. Another unusual spinning reel & rod sale was a True Temper/Bronson Uni-Spin fiberglass rod and under-slung reel (shown to the right) in EX that generated 37 bids before topping out at $286.13. Another popular combination rod/reel is the Hurd Supercaster. A walnut handled example that was VG in a VG case brought $152.50. Another miscellaneous reel sale was a Hardy Nottingham 4" walnut model from the 1890s and in VG, which reached $681.32.  Also a Hardy "Jewel" tournament casting reel, 4.5" "one of a kind" in EX sold for $1811. An Allcock ebonite Aerial reel, 3.5" and mint reached $1402.46.

Casting reels included a Swedish River 500 that was a non-levelwind reel and mint in box. It brought $190.86. A Spiral Wind Tru-Cast level wind reel that was EX in a VG box with papers and accessories sold for $268.76. An ABU Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C that was mint in a mint box reached $455.

A Peters Line Dryer "Indiana style" reel, mint in a good box/papers sold for $410.

Fly reels were led off with a Fowler hard rubber doughnut type sidemount reel that was patented in 1872. In EX condition this example, shown to the left, sold for $5310.11. Also generating a lot of interest was a Fin-Nor "wedding cake" #3 Tarpon fly reel in Mint condition that brought $1999. A Hardy St. George multiplier in VG sold for $1775. A German silver and hard rubber salmon reel, 4" and VG, marked "The Kosmic" reached $688.09. The month ended with an unmarked Montague German silver and hard rubber 60 yard fly reel covered with enough green gunk that the seller labeled it as a brass reel. Apparently bidders either figured they were smarter than the seller, or thought it was an unusual brass reel, for they didn't care about the missing end cap and bid it up to $352.99, well above its market value in that condition.

Big game reels included an Edward Vom Hofe M650 Islamorada #1 in VG which sold for $610. An ABU Ambassadeur 20 that was NIB brought $459. A Pflueger Kihoga with Rabbeth drag, 350 yard and EX reached $999.90.

Miscellaneous Fishing Stuff:

I was very shocked when I noted a two tone blue UMCO 1000U tackle box in EX- sell for $4,067. I was totally confused when I noted that the second place bidder had not been a registered bidder for several months. How do you bid when you are not registered? Then the question arises as to why did the winner make such an outlandish bid that he could be raised to that point by a possible shill bidder? Well, no one ever said that eBay wasn't lots of fun.

A really nice walnut Hardy salmon fly cabinet, 9x9x6", in EX and containing 114 old flies zoomed to $1470.

A Heddon Ice Decoy #400, VG+ and perch color, received 20 bids before selling for $620. An Automatic Guillotine Spring Hook, pat. 1899, EX large size on card reached $127.50.

An Abbey & Imbrie 1915 catalog in VG sold for $247.50. A 1929 Hardy Catalog in EX brought $182.50. A VF/VF signed, 1st Edition copy of Martin Keane's Classic Rods and Rodmakers topped out at $295.

A Michigan 1932 Non Resident license button in EX condition reached $132.50. A celo-top split shot tin for "Crescent Co. Flint, Mich." in EX brought $178.35. A Ball glass minnow trap in the original cardboard box in VG sold for $308.15. A couple of wire framed Shakespeare glass traps in EX brought $227.50 and $300.

Many thanks to Ben Wright, Dan Basore, Ed Barrett, Frank Cristao, Bill Arp and Scott Dowd with their help on this report.
